A Philosophy of Architecture
Process is the most essential element of design,
for it is through process that we change the world
Understanding our Process
Navigating an architectural project from a blank page to a finished structure is a highly collaborative journey broken down into clear, manageable milestones. To help clarify this workflow for those looking to learn more, our process is divided into two primary tracks: the phases highlighted in red represent the core architectural stages led by BATL Studio, while the phases highlighted in white mark the transition into physical construction, where the contractor is selected, active building begins, and field execution takes center stage.
To help budget and scope your project effectively, our workflow is organized around a central timeline. Base Architectural Services—the essential foundational phases required for any standard design—are positioned on the left side of the timeline. Additional Services (which can be dynamically layered in depending on your specific property constraints or aesthetic goals) along with all subsequent phases related to the contractor are positioned on the right side of the timeline.
Clicking the individual phase icons within the diagram above will navigate directly to the corresponding detailed section below. This step-by-step sequence provides complete transparency, showing exactly how an abstract idea transforms into a physical reality.
Site Visit
The process begins with an initial, complimentary site visit. Walking the property allows for a firsthand analysis of existing conditions, spatial orientation, topography, and unique site characteristics. This evaluation provides the essential baseline data required to ground the upcoming conceptual work in the physical realities of the land or building.
For renovations, additions, or adaptive reuse projects, establishing a fundamental understanding of the existing structure is vital. This step involves a field survey where the team gathers rough dimensions of both interior and exterior environments to capture the existing conditions.
In addition to these preliminary layout dimensions, a photographic and video record is compiled. This visual repository serves as an active technical reference throughout the design phases, allowing new architectural elements to interface smoothly with the existing layout.
Kick-off Meeting
As-Built Documentation
Once a formal partnership is established, the project transitions into a collaborative kick-off meeting. This session focuses on defining the project scope, organizational roles, timelines, and broad milestones. Clients are encouraged to share inspiration imagery, material preferences, and functional "must-haves." The insights gathered during this alignment session are used to build the structured work plan that guides the entire project.
Following the initial scope alignment, an evaluation is conducted to determine if specialized external consultants are required for the project. Depending on the complexity and type of build, this may include structural, mechanical, electrical, or civil engineers, as well as landscape architects or zoning specialists. Identifying these baseline technical needs early allows for an accurate understanding of the project team structure and helps streamline coordination before formal design work begins.
Consultant Evaluation
Programming
Programming serves as the analytical and conceptual foundation of the project, focusing on spatial needs, complex operational flows, and primary project constraints. While foundational to any design, this comprehensive service is typically utilized for larger, more complex commercial or institutional projects, as well as macro-level master planning and extensive site design.
Instead of diving directly into blueprints, this phase maps out how complex spaces will be utilized and how they relate to one another. It is also the stage where we analyze localized zoning codes, identify potential technical or environmental variables, and define the overarching architectural philosophy that will guide the aesthetics and logic of the project. These requirements are translated into organizational diagrams and adjacency matrices, establishing a functional and strategic framework before formal drafting begins.
Schematic Design
The schematic design phase is where the project begins to take visual form. The abstract ideas and design criteria—whether derived from baseline project requirements or advanced programming guidelines—are translated into initial architectural concepts, exploring various layout options, massing configurations, and building forms. Through loose sketches, preliminary floor plans, and digital 3D models, the overall look, feel, and spatial flow are established and refined.
Interior Design
The interior design phase bridges the gap between external structure and human experience, focusing on textures, lighting, and spatial touchpoints. This is an optional service that can be requested if a project requires specialized assistance curating a space or selecting specific colors, materials, and finishes. To streamline what can often feel like an overwhelming selection process, the design team is here to assist by curating tailored options for review. Advanced 3D renderings are paired with tangible physical samples, providing clear visualization of the interior environments.
Design Development
With the schematic direction approved, the project advances into design development. This phase focuses on refining the aesthetic concept into a highly detailed technical model, formally incorporating curated interior selections, colors, and materials if this additional service was selected. The team refines specific dimensions and integrates core structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) systems through close coordination with specialized engineering consultants when they are utilized.
The studio strongly recommends engaging one of our partner general contractors at this stage. Introducing a building professional during design development allows for preliminary coordination, early budget alignment, and constructability reviews well before the project transitions into formal construction drawings.
Building Permit Coordination
For complex or highly regulated developments, early building permit coordination provides a strategic advantage. Initiating an early dialogue with municipal entities allows the team to identify localized building code interpretations or zoning variables well in advance. This proactive research can assist the team in identifying critical items early and can help minimize administrative delays later in the process.
Following design development, the refined concepts are translated into a comprehensive set of construction drawings. These detailed blueprints and technical documents serve as the definitive reference used by general contractors to price and execute the physical build. As the project moves from the drawing board to the field, the studio remains available to assist in evaluating builder proposals, answering technical inquiries, and tailoring the necessary level of ongoing field support.
Construction Drawings
Contractor Selected
Transitioning from drawings to active construction requires onboarding the right building team. If a general contractor has not already been integrated into the project during earlier design phases, this step serves as the formal selection milestone. BATL Studio provides access to a trusted network of general contractors and builders who understand high-fidelity execution. These professionals can assist with early budgeting, scheduling, and constructability reviews. The studio remains equally open to collaborating with an independent building team preferred by the client.
Navigating the building permit phase involves submitting the completed architectural and engineering packages to local municipal authorities for formal administrative review. This process typically involves a standard back-and-forth review period between the city plans examiners and the design team to align the project documentation with the jurisdiction's specific code requirements. Once the jurisdiction issues the formal permit, active on-site construction is legally authorized to begin.
Building Permitting
Start of Construction
With permits in hand and the contractor selected, physical breakthroughs commence. The project officially transitions into an active construction site managed by the building contractor, where structural foundations, framing, and infrastructure begin converting digital blueprints into physical realities.
Construction Administration
Field execution relies on clear, continuous communication. During the active building phase, questions naturally arise regarding site conditions or design interpretations. When Construction Administration is included as an additional service, the studio serves as an active technical resource on-site and an advisor to the client. This phase involves visiting the site periodically, answering field inquiries swiftly, and actively advocating for the integrity of the design intent throughout the build, concluding with a collaborative final review alongside the project team.
Final Walkthrough
As construction draws to a close, a formal final walkthrough is conducted by the owner to review the completed spaces alongside the contractor. This walkthrough evaluates that the physical building matches the owner's original design intent coordinated with the design team, while identifying any field issues that require correction before the contractor hands off the building to the owner. If Construction Administration is included in the project scope, the studio will walk alongside the owner during this session to assist in compiling a final punch list before formal project closeout.
Post Occupancy Evaluation
End of Construction
The physical realization of a project marks the culmination of the core architectural journey. Moving from initial schematic sketches to the final day of on-site detailing, the completion of the structure represents a shared milestone where the collaborative vision becomes a physical reality, ready for handover and occupancy.
Following project occupancy, the studio welcomes feedback and post-occupancy insights from the owner to review how the built environment functions over time. In alignment with a commitment to continuous research, these practical field experiences and performance metrics are studied and integrated back into the studio's toolkit, informing future design approaches and subsequent studio projects.
For BATL Studio, the completion of a building is never the end of our journey together; it is simply the beginning of a lasting relationship. We care deeply about the people who inhabit the spaces we design, and we place immense value on the personal bonds formed through collaborative creation. These partnerships are intentionally built to endure, ensuring that you always have a trusted design team in your corner and a continuous line of open communication for years to come.
